Equity of Voice Series
Join us for the Equity of Voice Teaching and Learning Series this March!
We’re putting together a series of interactive sessions this Spring across content areas. Our incredible instructional coaches are compiling and sharing some of their favorite learning experiences. We are hoping to increase access to these opportunities by offering them virtually and at various times. Join these conversations to connect with other educators and learn alongside our incredible instructional coaches.
A socially just classroom is one in which all students feel empowered to contribute, critique, and collaborate. So often however, we institutionally and instructionally stifle this learner engagement. Equity of voice is both a principle and a practice. Our sessions aim to empower teachers with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to ensure each student’s story is woven into the classroom, fostering a diverse and nurturing learning environment.
A lot of PD covers the why and the what: “here’s why this topic is so important” and “here’s and example of what this topic looks like.” But teaching isn’t a take-and-bake activity that only requires you to grasp something’s importance. Educators need to sit in the how, the questions that so often get left out. CSET’s Equity of Voice Sessions center on how questions. How can you adapt and remix a research-backed strategy to your classroom? How might you approach a problem differently to center your practice on what matters most to you? How can your classroom promote all students to contribute, critique, and collaborate?

The first and last interactive sessions of this series will be free and open to all. Join us to reconnect to what matters and find support in bringing social justice into your schools.

Together in community, we will develop instructional social justice stances to help us align our practice with our principles. Educators will have an opportunity to connect and engage with other professionals, exploring ways to connect classroom learning with social justice concepts. Share this opportunity widely as we will have space for many and small group break-outs for all.

Small Group Workshops: A Deeper Dive into Classroom Practice
Between these sessions, our experienced instructional and leadership coaches are leading small group workshops. These $50 sessions will allow you space, time, and collaborators to explore ways to bring greater equity of voice to your classroom. Sign up for a strength or an area of growth. Sessions need at least three attendees to run. Discounts are available for multiple sessions. Please email cset@stanford.edu to learn more about discounted workshop rates.

Tuesday, March 19
What makes an activity group worthy? Alissa, one of our experienced instructional coaches, will lead this interactive workshop centered on authentic engagements and worthy tasks. Participants will learn research on what features of a task make it worth doing in groups in any content area. Our focus on In groups, participants will discuss and adapt tasks for classroom practice. While Alissa's content expertise is math, this session will be relevant and grounded in all content areas that engage with group work. Join this session to discuss and problem solve with other educators and leave with a better grasp on how to bring worthy tasks into your classroom.

Join Rachel, one of our experienced science coaches, in this cross-curricular workshop on student discourse. In this interactive 90-minute session on zoom, we will focus on ways to increase equity of voice by building-up students’ discourse skills. We will explore the inequitable barriers students face in participating in discussions, and we will build bridges to support students in sharing their brilliant ideas with each other.

Join our Social Justice Implementation Lead, Tawheedah, to explore what it means to foster a classroom culture where every student’s voice is honored? This 90-minute interactive workshop will center on discussion and be relevant across all content areas. Join a group of educators energized to bring equity of voice meaningfully into their work and leave with ideas to bring into your own classrooms.

As classroom teachers, we all know the benefits of student-centered discussion, so how do we ensure we are setting up students for success? Join Tina, one of our experienced instructional coaches for this session, to explore the importance of the launch question, and how it can set the stage for authentic text-based discussion in the Humanities classroom. We will reflect on what makes a question “teacher-centered” versus “student-centered” and practice creating authentic launch questions relevant to our own setting.

In the age of generative AI, humans can create high quality videos, hit songs, and academic essays using only simple, natural language instructions. This new technology is already shifting the types of skills and knowledge students will need in an evolving world. Join Chris, a PhD candidate and one of our instructional coaches, for this interactive session to explore why it's more important than ever to make student thinking visible, and we'll co-design possible ways to use generative AI to do it.

How do we uphold equity of voice for students in spaces where they are not present? Join Stacy, a former principal and experienced coach, to explore planning team and department meetings where equity of voice for our students, as well as the adults in the space, is centered.

Equity of voice goes beyond classroom discussions. Join our incredible instructional coach Tina for this session, where we'll explore how equity of voice also lives in the world of writing. Specifically, we'll dig into how creative writing can be used as a tool for authentic voice and learning in any classroom--not just the English classroom. Therefore, teachers in all content areas are encouraged to attend.
This session will be exploratory and experiential in nature, so come prepared to engage in three quick creative writing activities spanning the genres of poetry, flash fiction, and even songwriting!

When students are working in groups, how might a teacher decide when to enter the group? And for what purpose? STEM teachers will study 5 “nudges” a teacher might offer when conferring with student groups. Join Alissa, one of our math instructional coaches, for this interactive 90-minute workshop, and leave with some ideas and strategies for your own classroom.
